Tutor of the Month!
Each month we have a tutor that blows us out of the water. From being extra flexible with their schedule, to going above and beyond in lessons, we want to recognize one tutor every month for being outstanding, and for you as parents to get to know them!
This month we are ecstatic to announce Robert as our Tutor of the Month!
My name is Robert Russell, and I have been teaching for nearly 15 years. Having worked in the field of biomedical research for several years before becoming a full-time teacher, my specialty is sciences, math, and test prep. Having taught outside the U.S. for nearly 14 years, I also have advanced expertise in English, language arts, writing, and ESL/EFL learning. I enjoy working with learners of all ages, and have taught preschool through university levels. I am very pleased to be a member of the A+ Tutoring team, and look forward to working with you.
Congrats Robert and thank you so much for your hard work!

What are the Common Core State Standards?
Since 2010, the State of California has made some big changes to their educational system. In the past, students had been at various levels of education, with no real standard for how much they should know before heading to the next grade. That’s all changed with the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The CCSS are educational standards in each grade level (K-12) that test what each student should know, and match them up to students statewide, as well as worldwide. There are two major sections of the CCSS, English Language Arts, and Mathematics.
How have the CCSS changed the way our educational system is set up?
Before the CCSS were implemented, students were expected to remember facts and test only according to those facts, not critically think about what they mean. Now, the way educators are teaching is heavily based on critical and creative thinking. Long gone are the pencil and paper methods of teaching. Now technology is integrated throughout classrooms statewide, creating a more interactive learning environment for everyone.
Every year students will take the CCSS exams to better prepare themselves for their future, but how can we help as tutors and parents?
As parents and tutors we will need to create atmospheres that are fun as well as challenging for our students. Think of fun activities to do at home, like reading their favorite books together, create fun word problems to solve as a family, and follow simple trends in the stock market to teach your child the value of money. Any small interaction can turn into a learning opportunity.
At A+ we are here to help prepare you children for their Common Core exams! Call us today for a free in-home tutoring consultation!
